Flame Productions has a community arm which was set up to share the fun of circo arts and fire performance with communities around NZ. We were having soo much fun performing and devising shows, it was the next natural step to share it with anyone keen to learn.

We offer a range of workshops in hula, poi, stilt walking, staff spinning, juggling, dance and drama which can be done in schools or within communities. Our workshops are great for building confidence, developing co-ordination and improving communication in a fun and supportive environment. They're suitable for kids aged 8 to adults aged 80!

We also work within communities to produce fire shows by offering a range of workshops over a length of time, say one or two weeks, which culminate in a show which is performed at a local event or in front of family and friends.

Past Community Work

In 2005 Flame was employed to work with the Napier and wider Hawkes Bay community to produce a fire show for the Napier Fire Festival. We offered all the above workshops over a week, and then invited participants to be part of a 20-minute show called 'Fire and Ice'.
The show brought together 24 people from all walks of life, aging from nine through to 45 who we trained to be performers, crew or safety crew.
Performers had to learn basic choreography with their toys, both UV and fire, and the crew took responsiblity for the smooth running of the show. There were lots of nerves on the night, but everyone worked as a team and put on a fantastic show which made the front page of the Dominion Post the following day.
As a result of our time in Napier, the show's participants have formed a fire group and continue to meet once a week to spin fire. In essence they've created their own community and keep the joy and fun of fire performance alive.

Flame also co-ordinated a programme of community workshops for the 2005 Queenstown Winter Festival, sponsored by the Central Lakes Trust, culminating in a community Mardigras Parade. The programme called 'Mardigras Mayhem,' was put together to offer the Queenstown community a creative outlet during festival week.
Workshops included Circo Arts provided by Flame for the public and Wakatipu High drama students, mask making with Donna Demente, latin street dancing, African drumming with Rhythm Interactive and lantern making at the local primary school.
Over 250 people took part in the workshops and parade, which was a roaring success and also made the papers the next day.
